Earth Day 2020: #EarthDay50

Writer: Staff WriterStaff Writer

50 years ago today, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson organized a 20 million-strong demonstration to stand up for the environment. Here at EdCology we’re carrying on that legacy by promoting environmental education, advocacy, and merchandising.

In light of the COVID 19 crisis, we’ll be celebrating Earth Day inside, social distancing together, but here’s three ways that you can help:

1. Recycle.

In 2016, the EPA’s Recycling Economic Information (REI) Study released significant findings on the economic benefits of the recycling industry. The study found that in a single year, recycling and reuse activities in the United States accounted for:

  • 757,000 jobs

  • $36.6 billion in wages; and

  • $6.7 billion in tax revenues.

This equates to 1.57 jobs, $76,000 in wages, and $14,101 in tax revenues for every 1,000 tons of materials recycled.

2. Conserve Water.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation:

  • Water covers about 71% of the earth's surface, that’s about 326 million cubic miles of water on the planet. 97% of which (320 million cubic miles of water) is found in the oceans (too salty for drinking, growing crops, and most industrial uses).

  • Only, 3% of the earth's water is fresh. 2.5% of the earth's freshwater is unavailable: locked up in glaciers, polar ice caps, the atmosphere, and soil; highly polluted; or lies too far under the earth's surface to be extracted at an affordable cost.

  • Only 0.5% of the earth's water is available fresh water.

Realistic ways to conserve water: take shorter showers, wash your clothes all on one day, and support the use of urban greenspaces rather than a full lawn and garden.

3. Share your support of the environmental-friendliness movement.

In addition to buying merch from EdCology’s store (coming soon) and sponsoring environmental programs, you can also help by simply sharing content about the environment, the damaging effects of climate and pollution, and supporting candidates that believe in solving the problems caused by climate change and its discontents.

The easiest thing to do is share the #EarthDay50 hashtag on social media.
